Redpark company, Emeryville, California, and former founder of Keyspan, designed the GPS Cable C2-GPS for Apple devices Dock connector.

This cable is for connecting external GPS using output protocol NMEA 0183 (version 3.01 or +), and provided with a serial connection, with an iPhone, iPod Touch or iPad.

It is designed for iPhone 3G, 4 and 4S, iPod Touch (4th generation), iPad 1, 2 up to 3. GPS Cable is compatible with all applications that use geolocation provided as standard with all iOS devices, as iNavX, of course.

GPS Cable appThe maximum baud rate is 57600 bps and requires iOS 5.0.x or later. A utility GPS Cable can be downloaded from iTunes AppStore, it allows, among other, to monitor data stream and check the flow rate of the serial port.

This accessory is primarily designed for owners of Apple devices not equipped with a built-in GPS chipset (iPod Touch and iPad WiFi models including all) and permanent installation in their boat. Apple certified and sold 59$.

  1. Damage, the doc makes it clear that only the GGA and RMC sentences are exploitable, therefore no way to send AIS targets (VDM sentence) via the cable. It would be useful for stationary use at the chart table, wire connected to a conventional multiplexer, rather than a wireless access point or PC IAIS (power hungry). Ideally such a cable should also help to recharge the beast!
