Iridium - iPad connection – is coming out !

AxcessPoint

Router WiFi AxcessPoint of Iridium

I dont like to advertise products or features before they are available, but in this case the subject can guide choices or postponements of purchase among potential users.

Iridium announced on last 7 September the creation of a free service called Iridium AxcessPoint Mail & Web app which will be available before the end of the year 2011. This will be a mail and web compression service, hosted by Iridium, specifically designed to optimize data transmission with the new WiFi router Iridium Iridium Mail.

This service will provide to each user of the new Iridium phone 9575 Extreme or model 9555, connected to the AxcessPoint WiFi router, the ability to send emails or surf the web from a device connected via WiFi. Mac and PC, smartphones and tablets iOS (iPod, iPhone and iPad) will be supported by a specific application available soon. IPad users can therefore connect to the Iridium satellite network to directly receive GRIB files, send emails and maintain a blog.

Richard Ray already announced that iNavX (iPhone / iPad) will support the download and display GRIB weather files via WiFi Iridium AxcessPoint (In addition to WiFi and cellular standards), in the next iNavX update.

The AxcessPoint router

AxcessPoint Wi-Fi is a lightweight and portable device to connect with a USB cable to handset 9575 up to 9555 to create a WiFi hotspot which can connect compatible devices. Of course this means active Iridium data service subscription. Must first activate Iridium handset and ensure a good reception, then once connected through the USB cable to enable AxcessPoint. The Internet connection is automatically established. We can therefore connect the devices via WiFi. The speed of data transfer remaining low, AxcessPoint connection can be optimized by using a web and mail acceleration software.

Iridium AxcessPoint Mail & Web app

Iridium AxcessPoint Mail wants a fast mail service via satellite, reliable and easy to use. It will provide the following functions :

  • Mail transfer up to 15 times faster using a compression protocol and a custom server
  • Attachment filtering in reception
  • Recovery services compatible POP and IMAP (Yahoo!, Hotmail or Gmail)
  • Resume interrupted file and auto detection
  • SMS notification of messages received on the Iridium phone
  • Anti-virus scanning and spam filtering
  • DES / PGP encryption

This service will of course dedicated to email and internet light-surfing. It is not recommended for network applications requiring large bandwith such as video or music.

Iridium AxcessPoint Mail & Web app was developed to be compatible with a wide range of operating systems :

  • Windows 7, Vista and XP
  • Apple Mac OSX
  • Apple iOS on iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad

The service and the application will be free for Iridium subscribers using the WiFi router Iridium AxcessPoint. Airtime fees to acceed the Iridium satellite network will remain standard. The application will be available downloaded from the website iridium.com before the end 2011.

So great news for all potential users of iPad, hampered by the inability to receive the open sea GRIB weather files directly on their tablet. I hope to have the opportunity to make configurations in the winter 2012 to see how it all works.
