Reading : 'Electronic charting' HS48 Voiles et Voiliers

Since end 2012 I found no more of maritime books causing me the overwhelming desire to share, Like the few novels described in this section " Reading ”. Today this feeling comes back to me, in a completely different vein, on reading the excellent Special issue n° 48 of Voiles et Voiliers : " Understand and use electronic charting ”.

Bruno Clément and Jérôme Brillant, in partnership with members of the Glénans sailing school, engage in a study and very relevant analysis of the benefits as limitations of the use of electronic charting.

After a careful description of types of charting available, and a state of the equipment supporting, PC laptops, tablets, Multifunction displays, The authors detail the use of these modern tools in the light of common sense, Critical thinking, in the preparation and monitoring of navigation. Highlighting the advantages, but also the pitfalls, related to their use, they did not fail to illustrate the point by the study of recent maritime casualties caused by incompetent use of electronic charts. Positive, They highlight recent features that significantly increase security, AIS, Man Overboard, Alarms, not forget to mention the routing.

One particularly educational special that we should all have in onboard library.. A big congratulations !

  2. hello Francis

Yesterday evening I bought this HS "Sails and Sailboats" on the charts in a somewhat compulsive way. I felt like it would duplicate your excellent publications like "navigating with a digital tablet" as well as iBooks on "Inavx" and "Weather4D Pro". Well, not at all, It is a "must have" because there are very interesting examples concerning both long-distance cruising sailors and those who will make shorter crossings.
Finally, there are these two presentations on the misadventures of the Customs boat and that of the Volvo Ocean Race sailboat, which are very well explained. These two examples alone are a mine of lessons… and humility that we should all have in mind.
By the way, congratulations for your site that I discovered during a forced rest : it's a mine of information for a geeky browser of the Mac and iOS products.
