Curious price changes in Navionics

Bad news : changes in the price of Navionics charts for iNavX iPad appeared on the site x-traverse.com, and unfortunately for regions that concern us directly : Region 46XG Europe up to 43XG Mediterranean (replacing the previous 23XG 2011) for iPad increase +13% from $54 up to $61 (either daily exchange 38 € up to 43 € about).

At the same time, however,, Region 28XG British Isles loses -18% from $84 up to $69 (59 € up to 48 € about). Good news for English navigators, and our fellow citizens who travel the beautiful coastline of the "Perfide Albion".

The fact remains that, after a significant increase in early May with the arrival of Editions 2011, it is surprising to see such rapid changes just at the beginning of the summer season, you'd think the stock rates !

In November 2010, Reading this blog has strongly urged me get a multiplexer. Control its navigation and see instruments displayed with iPhone is really a challenging project. Crossing the Pacific with an iPad

After my first post Crossing the Atlantic with an iPad Here are some screenshots provided by Christophe Mahé between Panama and the Marquesas Islands, during its passage last month. How the iPhone knows where you are

This article was published on Macworld.com by Glenn Fleishman. He explains in very precise and didactic way location services of Apple iPhone and iPad and sheds light on the data that Apple gets on our devices. Imray charts are coming on iPhone and iPad

A little history

Imray charts, Laurie, Norie & Wilson LTD is the private publisher of nautical charts and nautical books the best known of England. It is also the oldest, heir of the first private publishers of nautical charts of the 18th century, les « bluebacks » ou « blueback charts », who owed their name to the blue manilla paper highly resistant used by these manufacturers.

I found out the Imray charts for yachting during my first trip to the West Indies, the late 80. All rental boats which I was involved were equipped with these charts, a smaller format so convenient to spread on the chart tables, Water resistant, folded and presented in robust clear pockets. Protections for iPad on boat

IPad is not watertight, we know. Apple has not designed for that purpose, one suspects. The creative genius of Steve Jobs has certainly not been to imagine that sailors would use the tablet as a chartplotter and get it over the oceans ! (¹)

But voila : we decided to take with us this equipment at sea, beach, desert, in a pool, and why not in the ISS (²), isn't it ?

It was therefore necessary that accessories manufacturers, and there are many for Apple devices, We produce protection against salt, water, sand and all external aggression that can damage our iPad.

After my post about mounts adapted to the boat, here's a quick overview of the various protections available on the market. Read more …

iTabNav.fr

This is an excellent initiative that we owe to Dominique Gauthier : iTabNav.fr is a new French e-commerce website mainly dedicated to iPad (and iPhone) accessories useful in’marine usage of these devices.

Rather than looking on Google for e-commerce websites overseas, you can now go to a French specialized website. Dominique Gauthier did not hesitate to raise my opinions on the technical aspects of his choice of accessories, being himself user and boater.

iTabNav.fr has been open for a few days, his catalog is gradually enriched, I welcome his initiative and wish him good luck.
