I presented in the first entry about protections for iPad onboard the water-resistant case by Andres Industries (*). This manufacturer reacted very quickly to the comments and criticisms made about its product. He was kind enough to send me to test their new case, modified and improved. A real happiness ! iTabNav.fr
This is an excellent initiative that we owe to Dominique Gauthier : iTabNav.fr is a new French e-commerce website mainly dedicated to iPad (and the iPhone) accessories useful in’marine usage of these devices.
Rather than looking on Google for e-commerce websites overseas, you can now go to a French specialized website. Dominique Gauthier did not hesitate to get my opinion on the technical aspects of his choice of accessories, being himself user and boater.
iTabNav.fr has been open for a few days, its catalog will gradually grow, I salute his initiative and wish him good luck.
iPad 2 and iOS 4.3 – What's new for boaters ?

It is now possible to connect a N2K system (¹) at iNavX, on iPhone or iPad.

Crossing the Atlantic with an iPad
I cannot resist the urge to show you some pics (*) to iNavX on iPad qui vient de traverser l’Atlantique, from Mediterranean to Martinique. The sailor has abandoned his MacBook Air, on which he uses MacENC for several years with S-57 ENC charts. Il a basculé sur un iPad 3G, featured iNavX, Navionics Gold charts and the Apple app Numbers to write his log book.

Receive AIS data wirelessly with iNavX
I explained, in a recent post, how to receive NMEA data from on-board instruments without using a Mac (or a PC) on board. It is now possible to do the same thing for receiving AIS data with an iPad or iPhone.
Digital Yacht has developed a new AIS receiver for use with Apple mobile devices. iAIS, is its name, transmits navigation data received from ships via WiFi to dedicated applications on iPhone or iPad via the TCP/IP protocol. Featured with AIS dual-channel A and B receiver, it also allows compatible applications access to NMEA data from on-board instruments. Read more …
Connect GPSNavX/MacENC with an AIS
It is more and more common to see an AIS receiver, Automatic Identification System (*), receiver above yacht's chart tables. Although only merchant vessels of over 300 tons and passenger ships are required to fit onboard an AIS Class A transponder, small commercial vessels are increasingly fitted with cheaper standard AIS Class B transponders.
