iNavX and the "Man Overboard"

For a while Rich Ray was asked to add a feature button "Man overboard" in its applications. Recently, following a new topic on the website macsailing.net forum, he motivated his refusal for the following reasons :

  1. Such a button would take up limited/valuable screen real-estate on every screen..
  2. Such a button , with expected behavior, come in violation of " Developer Program License Agreement " :
  • 3.3.8 For Applications that use location-based APIs, such Applications may not be designed or marketed for automatic or autonmous control of vehicles, aircraft, or other mechanical devices; dispatch or fleet management; or emergency or life saving purposes. Curious price changes in Navionics

Bad news : changes in the price of Navionics charts for iNavX iPad appeared on the site x-traverse.com, and unfortunately for regions that concern us directly : Region 46XG Europe up to 43XG Mediterranean (replacing the previous 23XG 2011) for iPad increase +13% by $54 up to $61 (either daily exchange 38 € up to 43 € about).

At the same time, however,, Region 28XG British Isles loses -18% by $84 up to $69 (59 € up to 48 € about). Good news for English navigators, and our fellow citizens who travel the beautiful coastline of the "Perfide Albion".

The fact remains that, after a significant increase in early May with the arrival of Editions 2011, it is surprising to see such rapid changes just at the beginning of the summer season, you'd think the stock rates !

reseau Sea Talk

In November 2010, Reading this blog has strongly urged me get a multiplexer. Control its navigation and see instruments displayed with iPhone is really a challenging project. iNavX, application steadily increasing

inavxSince the beginning of the year 2011, not less than six iNavX updates were made by Rich Ray, either one monthly !

If there is nothing revolutionary, many "invisible" improvements have been made, as optimizing objects display (waypoints, icons, tracks, routes, etc,), tracks resolution, convenient improvements on measures of distance, waypoints display, chart available information, alarm management (anchor, TCP/IP disconnect), instrument displays (analog or digital choice). iNavX and SiiTech AIS server

siitechiNavX allows connection, since version 3.1.7 from February the 11 October 2010, to the data server AIS SiiTech I mentioned in a previous post (¹). The benefit of this remains questionable in France because of the low coverage of our coasts. This may change.

Indeed, the number of SiiTech ground stations is increasing, the Channel coast are now well covered, and the Atlantic coast should be progressively equipped (²).

In addition, version 3.2.4 of iNavX comes with an improvement that makes a revival of interest for this feature : it is now available to select the origin point of AIS data from SiiTech server, the position of the ship (that of the iPhone / iPad used), or a previously created waypoint. The reception range is about 30 nautical miles from the place of origin, This greatly increases the coverage of AIS data reception.
