iNavX and SiiTech AIS server

siitechiNavX permet de se connecter, since version 3.1.7 from February the 11 October 2010, to the data server AIS SiiTech which I talked about in a previous post (¹). L’intérêt de ce service restait discutable en France à cause de la faible couverture de nos côtes. Cela pourrait changer.

Indeed, the number of SiiTech ground stations is increasing, les côtes de la Manche sont désormais bien couvertes, et le littoral Atlantique devrait être progressivement équipé (²).

In addition, The version 3.2.4 of iNavX comes with an improvement that makes a revival of interest for this feature : it is now available to select the origin point of AIS data from SiiTech server, soit la position du navire (celle de l’iPhone/iPad utilisé), soit d’un waypoint préalablement créé. Le rayon de réception étant d’environ 30 milles nautiques autour du lieu d’origine, cela permet d’augmenter considérablement la couverture de réception des données AIS.

Receive NMEA 2000 data with iNavX

ngw1It is now possible to connect a N2K system (¹) at iNavX, on iPhone or iPad.

Indeed, Actisense company, well known for its NMEA interfaces (multiplexers and gateways), designed the NGW-1 ISO, an NMEA 2000 gateway converter to NMEA 0183 and vice versa. Connected to a Miniplex-2Wi by ShipModul ou un WLN10 device, the data thus converted will be sent via WiFi to iNavX. Read more …

A test onboard with Navigation Mac

During a somewhat sad weekend in January, we joined the port of L'Herbaudière, Isle of Noirmoutier, via the picturesque Gois passage at low tide.

We, that is to say, a boating journalist, my wife and myself.

Welcomed by two “naturals” of the country, Henri and Jean-Etienne. The latter putting his superb Océanis at our disposal 347 for the first on-board test, In France, navigation applications on Mac, iPad and iPhone. A great first, somehow. Read more …

Crossing the Atlantic with an iPad

I cannot resist the urge to show you some pics (*) to iNavX on iPad qui vient de traverser l’Atlantique, from Mediterranean to Martinique. The sailor has abandoned his MacBook Air, on which he uses MacENC for several years with S-57 ENC charts. Il a basculé sur un iPad 3G, featured iNavX, Navionics Gold charts and the Apple app Numbers to write his log book.

Receive AIS data wirelessly with iNavX

iais

I explained, in a recent post, how to receive NMEA data from on-board instruments without using a Mac (or a PC) on board. It is now possible to do the same thing for receiving AIS data with an iPad or iPhone.

Digital Yacht has developed a new AIS receiver for use with Apple mobile devices. iAIS, is its name, transmits navigation data received from ships via WiFi to dedicated applications on iPhone or iPad via the TCP/IP protocol. Featured with AIS dual-channel A and B receiver, it also allows compatible applications access to NMEA data from on-board instruments. Read more …

iNavX and iOS4

ios4You are probably aware that the release of the new iOS4 operating system for iPhone and iPod Touch will be available today during the day, via synchronization of your (s) devices with iTunes. For the iPad, il faudra attendre l’automne.

About iNavX, Richard Ray has just written :

iOS 4 should be available tomorrow (21/06/2010). Only apps that are specifically built for iOS 4 pourront tirer parti du multitâche ou du basculement de tâches. iNavX 3.1.0 and later will support this feature.

Patience, therefore…

[Update September 01/07/2010] iNavX 3.1.0 is available on the AppStore.

iPad : new support for iNavX ?

Can not join the chorus of comments about’iPad qu’Apple a présenté hier. As far as we are concerned, for us yachtsmen, this new touch pad does not seem to represent anything other than an iPod Touch bigger screen, et c’est pourtant là tout son intérêt !
